"GIFT OF THE MAGI" ANNOTATIONS ASSIGNMENT
Write your own annotations for passages 8-10. This must be TYPED (handwritten assignments will receive a considerable point reducation). Students are to use the outline found in annotations reference guide entitled Marking a Text (Notebook Item #18) for information regarding the specific aspects of literature they are to focus on and discuss in their annotations.
Students should follow these guidelines:
1. Go through the passages in chronological order.
2. Remember to include discussion of what is suggested by what the author provides.
3. Look at specific language choices made by the author and focus on what those images imply or portray.
4. Observe the language used in the model annotations and try to adopt some of those key phrases. Doing this at first will get you into the habit of writing on topics that are relevant.
5. Write in depth commentary. Your commentary should be NO LESS than 10 sentences in length. You may exceed that number however.
6. Underline your own key phrases and identify the corresponding catagories from the outline.
7. When completing number 10, make sure to connect directly to the "big picture" of the story.
8. REMEMBER...THE TITLES OF SHORT STORIES ARE ALWAYS LABELED IN QUOTATION MARKS ( i.e. "GIFT OF THE MAGI")
