1. Study SAT Vocabulary Terms (List 1-Lesson 1); Students should review the following: a. word definitions b. related forms (family words) c. parts of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs) d. synonyms and antonyms e. notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. Quiz on List 1-Lesson 1 (words #1-10) is 8/24 [A] and 8/25 [B]. To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards.
2. Students should have obtained most, if not all, course supplies by 8/15 (this past Monday). Please have textbooks covered ASAP. Note to students: textbooks should be brought to class DAILY.
3. Complete SAT Vocabulary Exercises IV (Inferences) and V (Writing/Critical Reading). Students should use the yellow response sheets that were distributed in class. They may write on the back and add additional sheets of paper if necessary. Note to students: PLEASE DO NOT COMPLETE THE ESSAY PORTION OF EXERCISE V. Assignments are due next class meeting.
4. Students should begin nightly/daily review of the literary elements for prose literature. For a complete list of terms, students may look on the back of the 1st Quarter Pacing Guide (Notebook Item# 3). Students will be expected to have complete mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.
5. Complete the Creative Writing Assignment. The prompt is listed below:
Students will produce a well-written creative writing paper based on the following prompt: Depict a scene. This should focus on a scene, rather than a plot. Students must develop a paper that is descriptive, organized, uses transitions, and has clear details. The paper should use a minimum of four Figurative Language examples (simile, metaphor, personification) and five colorful images. Each example should be underlined. The paper must have 325-500 words, and students must follow the discussed class writing specifications. In addition, students must demonstrate good writing style, colorful use of language, good grammar, mechanics, and sentence variety, as well as continuity of thought. STUDENTS MUST STAPLE THIS RUBRIC TO THE FRONT OF THEIR PAPER. Standards: EW1, EW2, EW3
Students will be evaluated on their performance based on the following areas:
1. Content
2. Style
3. Format
4. Organization
The assignment is worth 100 points and an in-class assignment will follow. If no copy is submitted, student will not be able to participate, and will lose participation points. Work will be read aloud in class. In addition, the student's work MUST be typed. No handwritten copies please.
6. Review the handout labeled MARKING A TEXT. This is a comprehensive guide to the process known as annotating. Since we will be using this process throughout the school year, it is imperative that students familiarize themselves with the procedure. A discussion will follow.
