HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (9/30/13)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Complete the active reading and annotating of "The City Tourists Never Knew" (Steptoe); annotate the text and follow the specific directions printed on the assignment sheet. Apply the SOAPSTone Method, Modes of Development, and Rhetorical Terms to your analysis (use all three handouts). Complete the Reflection Summary on the back of the text. Pleae consult the rubric for this assignment. DUE 10/4/13 (Final Evaluation: 50 points)

II. Obtain a copy of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” (Skloot); you may buy, borrow, or download a copy of the text. Begin reading pages 87-end. DUE ASAP

III. Complete the SAT Vocabulary List 2 Extended Definition Assignment; follow all directions printed on the sheet. Go to the materials section in schoology.com (click this link) to download the format guide sheet. DUE 10/8/13 (50 points)

IV. Review the Unit Lesson notes on Non-Fiction Concepts (e.g. Non-Fiction texts, Purposes, SOAPSTone, Modes of Development); prepare for in-class graded assessments.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (Lists 1 and 2) You should review the following items:

*word definitions
*part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
*related forms (family words)
*synonyms and antonyms
*notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.
*suffix endings and roots
*context clue types

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
