HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (9/4/13)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Complete the SAT Vocabulary List 1 Extended Definition Assignment; submit a hard copy in class and an electronic copy to www.turnitin.com. If you have questions please email me. (DUE 9/6/13 ICC/TIINC)

II. Read and review the course curriculum paper and policies guide. Know the course policies and procedures. Ask if you are unsure of something.

III. Revise and expand the Supplemental Handout (Unit Introduction for Into the Wild); complete the three-column chart for the packet. Review the three-column chart overview sheet for additional information.

V. Obtain a copy of “The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks” (Skloot); you may buy, borrow, or download a copy of the text. Begin reading pages xiii-86. (DUE ASAP)

VI. Review or read Into the Wild (Krakauer). The assessment for this text is TBA. Please do not wait to reacquaint yourself with the text.

VII. Review the Unit Lesson notes on Vocabulary Development and Comprehension. You are expected to demonstrate your understanding of the discussed concepts. An exit lesson assignment will be given next week.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LIST 1) You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.
-suffix endings and roots
-context clue types

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.

d. Ability to make inferences
e. Word Parts
f. Grammar identification and correction
