HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (9/25/14)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

1. Obtain (e.g. buy or borrow) a copy of Into the Wild (Krakauer); when you receive the book please begin reading the book. Use your pre-existing annotation skills and the skills taught in class (i.e. the "Knight Way of Annotating") to annotate the book. READING OF CHAPTERS 1-9 DUE NOW; the READING OF CHAPTERS 10-EPILOGUE DUE 9/25.

*NOTE: see me ASAP if you have trouble obtaining a copy of the book. 

2. Re-read and annotate "The City Tourists Never Knew" by Sonja Steptoe. Use the non-fiction terms handout to annotate important information found in the text. Read ALL directions and learning objectives. Use you own annotation style and the "Knight Way of Annotating" to complete this assignment. FINAL COLLECTION DATE: 9/29 (50 points)

4. Read (or review) the first 100 pages of “Mythology” (Hamilton) prepare for the summer reading assessment/assignment/discussion. TEST TBA 

BULLETINS

1. The next after school support session is 10/7/14.The topic is annotating literature. I will place the practice piece in a folder in the Materials section of the MC. You are advised to read this piece BEFORE attending. Annotating the piece is not required since we will be doing that together. The start time is 3:00; the end time is 4:00. Email me if you plan to attend.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

A. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (List 1) You should review the following items:

*word definitions
*part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
*related forms (family words)
*synonyms and antonyms
*notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

*suffix endings and roots

*context clue types

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

B. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

C. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

D. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

E. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

F. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
