HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (4/29 and 4/30)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS*

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Organize your notebook. SEE NOTEBOOK STRUCTURE CHART (on blog). AS INDICATED IN CLASS THIS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!

II. Review your ‘Literature Focus: Understanding Shakespeare and Elizabethan Drama’ (page 574-577 in textbook) study outline and the Shakespeare Lecture Notes (given in class). Expect a quiz next week.

III. Review the ‘Before You Read: The Tragedy of Romeo and Juliet’ pre-reading material (page 579 in textbook); use this as a warm-up to our active reading of the text.

IV. BRING TEXTBOOK TO CLASS! OUR ROMEO AND JULIET STUDY REQUIRES YOUR BOOK. NO BOOK = NO READING PART = LOSS OF POINTS…

V. Look at the Dramatis Personae (i.e. the characters) on page 581 since you will be taking the part of many of these characters during our active reading sessions..

VI. Use the Assertion-Evidence-Commentary format for literary analysis and compose a typed analysis response; in your response you are to clearly discuss the central theme, purpose and argument of Shakespeare’s Act I prologue. Be specific. Offer a line by line analysis.

This response should be more analysis than interpretation. You must also answer the following questions: What is the function of the prologue? Is it effective? See type specifications on format guide sheet. DUE 5/3 [A], 5/4 [B] ...PLEASE upload your work to www.turnitin.com.

VII. Study the SAT Vocabulary List 7 terms.

VIII. Review your Grammar Unit notes...the active lessons and quizzes will begin soon.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LISTS 5, 6, and 7). You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary elements of poetry and prose. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the elements of grammar. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of all elements.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes textbooks, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
