BULLETIN: Poetry

Self Pity
by D.H. Lawrence

I never saw a wild thing
sorry for itself.
A small bird will drop frozen dead from a bough
without ever having felt sorry for itself.

I think the theme of this poem is "Don't Feel Sorry for Yourself." D.H. Lawrence claims that not even a wild thing such as a bird would feel self-pity for itself. The bird that the poet mentions in this poem has dropped dead, but not ever once feeling pity for himself. Humans have a reasoning inside of them that once they go through something tough, every bit of their self-pity shows and some people tend to drowned in it and become expecting of the sympathy from others.

I think what Lawrence is trying to say is that wild animals do not pity for themselves and neither should people.
