TASK: Using the concept of Assertion, Evidence, Commentary (and the Four Levels of Commentary) write a detailed, supported response for writing prompt question. The response to the prompt must be no less than 400 words. Failing to support your response will result in a loss of points. Write the prompt out before writing the response.
Use the provided copy of ‘Unclaimed Territory’ by Louisa DeBoo. Read and annotate the poem before you write your response.
OBJECTIVE: Students should be able to write a detailed short answer response using the AEC/Multi-level commentary concept. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to formulate an assertion, provide evidence to support that assertion, and then provide higher level commentary to explain the assertion.
CONTENT FOCUS AREAS: Reference and Research, Main Idea, Author Purpose, Point of View
LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: 4
PROMPT: Before writing do a line-by-line annotation of the poem first. Use a dictionary to define unfamiliar words. Then, in your writing journal discuss what this poem about. Provide a thesis statement or assertion. Discuss the author’s use of imagery, mood and tone. Address how the speaker’s (or author’s) perspective (or point of view) affects the poem? Pull lines from the poem to support your response. Use the multiple levels of discussion to craft your commentary.

‘Unclaimed Territory’
by Louisa DeBoo
The empty white blank page
Issuing a challenge to me
Four corners squaring off
Unknown regions to be explored...
My pen is primed and ready.
I watch endlessly, searchingly
the people, the events
passing by
Faces, quick frozen snapshots
Idle comments, left hanging
Nothing seems, nothing feels new
No whimsical rhymes, no flashes of wisdom
Reaching out to me...
nor I to them...
I retire my pen. Unused.
The empty white blank page
Shouts with shaming silence.
Four corners framing
Untouched, unclaimed territory.
