Making a Fist
by Naomi Shihab Nye
For the first time, on the road north of Tampico*,
I felt the life sliding out of me,
a drum in the desert, harder and harder to hear.
I was seven, I lay in the car
watching palm trees swirl a sickening pattern past the glass.
My stomach was a melon split wide inside my skin.
"How do you know if you are going to die?"
I begged my mother.
We had been traveling for days.
With strange confidence she answered,
"When you can no longer make a fist."
Years later I smile to think of that journey,
the borders we must cross separately,
stamped with our unanswerable woes.
I who did not die, who am still living,
still lying in the backseat behind all my questions,
clenching* and opening one small hand.

PART II (SHORT JOURNAL RESPONSE)
TASK: Using the concept of Assertion, Evidence, and Commentary (and the Four Levels of Commentary) write a detailed, supported response for writing prompt question. The response to the prompt must be DETAILED.
Failing to support your response will result in a loss of points. Write out the prompt before writing the response. As you write your response pull examples from the poem to support your response.
MAIN IDEA: In your response you are to clearly discuss the title and theme of Nye’s poem. Be specific. Offer a line by line analysis.
ASSIGNMENT: Use your knowledge of the elements/devices of poetry and your ability to respond to literature, and write a detailed response in which you discuss the poem’s theme. *NOTE: Stay on topic…don’t stray…nor discuss things that do not directly connect or pertain to the poem.
OBJECTIVE: Using your knowledge of the elements of poetry you should be able to demonstrate your knowledge of literary analysis, poetic literary devices, and your ability to write a detailed discussion response. In our study of poetry, various concepts, and philosophies, you should be able to recognize the universal function of a piece of poetry, as well as recognize how that poem affects both the reader and the listener. You should be able to write a response in the correct ASSERTION, EVIDENCE, and COMMENTARY format.
