WRITING ASSIGNMENT: Short Journal Writing Assignment #4

taken from the back of the 3/1 [A], 3/2 [B] Daily Record half-sheet:

TASK: Using the concept of Assertion, Evidence, Commentary (and the Four Levels of Commentary) write a detailed, supported response for each of the following questions. You are allowed to use your personal copy of Fahrenheit 451 (if you have it).

The response to the prompt must be no less than 400 words. Failing to support your response will result in a loss of points. Write the question out before writing the response.

CONTENT FOCUS AREAS: Reference and Research, Main Idea

LEVEL OF DIFFICULTY: 4

1. Why did Mildred try to commit suicide? If she enjoyed her parlor ‘family’ and Seashell radio so much, what would drive her to behave in such a way? Do you think that, without exposure to things like literature, it becomes more difficult to ascertain* the inherent* value of life? How does this relate to society today? Could the proliferation* of things like television, movies, games, and the Internet eventually inhibit* our ability to actually enjoy life?

*definition? Use a dictionary.

OBJECTIVE: Students should be able to write a detailed short answer response using the AEC/Multi-level commentary concept. They should be able to demonstrate their ability to formulate an assertion, provide evidence to support that assertion, and then provide higher level commentary to explain the assertion.

DUE 3/3 [A], 3/4 [B]
