Sentence 1 (TS): Poetry is an effective literary genre used to communicate author emotion.

Sentence 2 (CD): For example, in the poem ‘If We Must Die’ poet Claude McKay uses his poem as an emotional plea to stand up and fight. He says, ‘If we must die let it not be like hogs/hunted and penned in an inglorious spot.’

Sentence 3 (CM): McKay uses tone and metaphor to indicate to his readers that the cause that he wants them to undertake is one that may result in a loss of life.

Sentence 4 (CM): The plea to his audience and readers, as well as the tone of that plea suggests a high level of emotion possessed by McKay, a renowned Harlem Renaissance writer. His use of the metaphors ‘hogs’ is meant to stir up an emotional response with hopes of creating action.
