Writing Assignment: Practice Creative Writing Assignment
Pre-AP English / KNIGHT
TASK: Read the following prompt and type a detailed description. You should follow all type specification rules and assignment requirements/rules if you wish to make the best grade possible.
Use vivid, descriptive figurative language to write about a scene (a place) that is either real or imagined (for example: the beach, a park, a deserted island, grandparent’s house, outer space, etc.) This should reflect serious writing.
You must adhere to the following requirements:
1. The description must between 325-500 words (you MAY NOT exceed this).
2. Your description MUST NOT include characters, only describe the scene (place). THIS IS NOT A PLOT…DO NOT TELL A STORY!
3. Your description must include a minimum of four (4) different figurative language examples (see prose literary terms handout) and an additional five (5) colorful images. You must underline all examples of figurative language and description…you should have a total of nine (9). This is the minimum…you may exceed if your wish.
4. I will be looking for the following: (a) good writing style, (b) colorful use of language, (c) good grammar, mechanics, sentence variety, and (d) continuity of thought (begin with a specific focus and stay with it).
5. Full circle closure: Create an image at the end that connects back to your opening image, like the beginning and ending points of a circle.
6. Dominant impression of your description should be written at the end of your piece of writing. This should be ONE WORD that describes a feeling or a mood. Type this in all lowercase letters…center.
7. Your writing MUST be in the form of a typed draft. This will be graded and used in class as part of a group activity. Type specs: Times New Roman, 12 point font, double spaced
8. LEAVE YOUR NAME OFF OF YOUR PIECE OF WRITING…ONLY WRITE YOUR ROW/SEAT ASSIGNMENT…WE ONLY WANT ANONYMOUS PIECES FOR THE GROUP ASSIGNMENT.
9. REMEMBER THE GOLDEN RULE: BE INVENTIVE. BE IMAGINATIVE. CREATE!
10. FINAL NOTE: No paper = No credit and no participation in group assignment.
MATERIALS: prose literary terms and dictionary.
