WARM-UP ASSIGNMENT
-Task: Using their writing journals and at least three modes of development and rhetorical devices, students should respond to the following prompt: Should teens who do not attend college immediately following their school graduation be required to serve for at least five years in some branch of the United States armed forces (Marines, Air Force, Navy, Army, etc.)? Provide support for your response. Must be at least 150-200 words…a word count is required.
-Materials: Writing journals, pens/pencils, list of rhetorical devices and modes of development.
-Objective: Students should be able to use their knowledge of the modes of development and rhetorical devices in a piece of writing. [STANDARD EW1, 2, 3/ER 2]
-Time: 10 min.

2. Group Activity-Identifying Rhetorical Devices
-Task: Using their knowledge of rhetorical elements, their notes, and the assigned essay, The City Tourists Never Knew by Sonja Steptoe (Time Magazine, Sept. 12, 2005), students will identify at least 15 rhetorical devices and several modes of development used. PLEASE USE and FOLLOW THE PROCEDURE AND MODEL (see assignment guide half sheet). Students should use the same groups that they were assigned to on Wednesday.

3. Activity-NIGHT Activity Assignment
-Task: Using a personal copy of the novel NIGHT, the assignment sheet and packet, students will complete the novel related activity. This assignment is not to be completed with the assistance of a classmate. Students will have 30 minutes to work.
-Materials: personal copy of NIGHT, assignment sheet, assignment packet, pen/pencil, and paper.
-Objective: To introduce students to author Elie Wiesel, and aspects of The Holocaust. [STANDARD ER2, EW1, 2, 3]
-Time: 30 min.
