HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS: 1/21/15

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

1. Read Part 2: Stories of Love and Adventure of Mythology by Edith Hamilton; annotate the text as you read. PAST DUE

2. Begin reading and annotating your copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury. Fahrenheit 451 (Part 1) was DUE 1/5; Fahrenheit 451 (Part 2) is DUE 1/21; Fahrenheit 451 (Part 3) is DUE 1/29. Complete a Prose fiction analysis outline for each part of this novel. A PDF copy of the blank prose fiction analysis outline can be found in the Schoology MC. ALL THREE OUTLINES ARE DUE 1/29 (150 points).

3. Read the Shirley Jackson author study texts: (1) “The Mental Floss” article (2) “The New York Times” article, and “The Lottery” (Jackson); please annotate ALL texts (note: only use the prose fiction terms and concepts for “The Lottery”).

“The Lottery” Pages 1-5 are DUE on 1/23. The Reflection Summary is DUE on 1/23 (ICC/TIINC).

4. Review the handouts on American Realism. Know the characteristics. BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS THEM.

6. Continue to use the Grammar Links on the class blog to visit grammar review websites; take online practice grammar quizzes to “hone” your proofreading skills. Email me the results from your practice. Begin these online exercises now. Only complete the practice quizzes for the assigned concepts (see Schoology Master Class).

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

A. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (Lists 1, 2, 3, and 4) You should review the following items:

*word definitions
*part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
*related forms (family words)
*synonyms and antonyms
*notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

*suffix endings and roots

*context clue types

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

B. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

C. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

D. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

E. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

F. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
