HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (11/19)

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS* 

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

1. Read Part 2: Stories of Love and Adventure of Mythology by Edith Hamilton; annotate the text as you read. DUE 12/18

2. Obtain a copy of Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury by 11/25. Begin reading and annotating your copy. Analysis outlines will be assigned for this text.


3. Review the SAT Vocabulary concepts (e.g. suffix endings, roots, types of context clues).


4. Read the handouts on the Movements in American Literature. Know the characteristics of Gothic Fiction. BE PREPARED TO DISCUSS THEM.


5. Read “The Cask of Amontillado” (Poe); please annotate pages 1-2 using the prose fiction terms and concepts sheet that was given to you. Use the discussion questions to guide your analysis of the text. I will conduct a first check of pages 1-2 on 11/17. Pages 3-6 are DUE on 11/19. The Reflection Summary is DUE on 11/21 (ICC/TIINC)


6. Define the SAT Vocabulary List 3 terms on the Quick Review sheet. Please do a thorough analysis of the words. Follow all directions. DUE 11/25

2. Prepare for the Unit Lesson on Prose Fiction. You are going to be expected to take notes during the discussion and demonstrate prior knowledge of prose literature analysis.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

A. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (Lists 1, 2, and 3) You should review the following items:

*word definitions
*part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
*related forms (family words)
*synonyms and antonyms
*notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.
*suffix endings and roots
*context clue types

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

B. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

C. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

D. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

E. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

F. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
