TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS*

I. Organize your notebook. SEE NOTEBOOK STRUCTURE CHART (on blog). AS INDICATED IN CLASS THIS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!

II. Review all Unit Lesson notes (i.e. Vocabulary Development and Comprehension, Literary Analysis Writing, and Non-Fiction Analysis); informal (or formal) assessments will be conducted daily.

III. Obtain (buy or borrow) a copy of Into the Wild by Jon Krakauer; read Chapters 1-Epilogue (WHOLE TEXT). DUE NOW

IV. Read the Into the Wild Group Analysis Project Overview Guide; THIS IS EXTREMELY IMPORTANT! Please review all aspects of the packet and bring questions to our next class meeting. Prepare to continue working with your groups during our next class. Complete any group related tasks.

Assignment: Begin locating possible passages to be used as evidence for your four assertions. DUE 10/10 [A], 10/11 [B]

V. Update your Writing Assignment Commentary Log Sheet for the Chunk Paragraph Writing Assignment #1 (To Kill a Mockingbird). I have a model copy in the classroom (Room 204) if you need to see an example of how it should be filled out. Updated log is DUE 10/10 [A], 10/11 [B]

VI. Review the SAT Vocabulary LIst 2 concepts (definitions, word parts, context clue types); SAT 2.2 Quiz on 10/10 [A], 10/11 [B].

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LIST 1 and 2) You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.

Details:

1. This is a collaborative analysis project; you will be working in a randomly assembled group.
2. You are fully expected to use the concepts of literary analysis, literary criticism, multiple levels of commentary, and chunk paragraph writing
3. You will create two main artifacts (an extensive outline and a power point presentation)
4. There are three grades for the project: 100 point individual score, 100 point group score, and 50 point observer score. These scores will be treated as separate assignments
5. Your presentation should be at least 45 minutes in length; your group will discuss the topic with one another...NOT with the class (the class will merely observe)
6. Discussion Sessions may be recorded.
7. The analysis topics for the project are:

Topic A: Jon Krakauer's use of characterization
Topic B: Jon Krakauer's use of description
Topic C: Jon Krakauer's use of tone and mood
Topic D: Jon Krakauer's use of symbolism

8. You will also be asked to analyze the authors of the epigraphs (and their epigraphs) found at the beginning of each chapter. You will need to include them in your discussion as they might relate to your topic.

10. You are expected to showcase your best active speaker skills...no participation during the prep session or discussion session will garner you an unsatisfactory score.
