I. Organize your notebook. SEE NOTEBOOK STRUCTURE CHART (on blog). AS INDICATED IN CLASS THIS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!
II. Review the notes taken during the Unit Lesson (Discovering Prose Fiction); review terms, concepts, and other information. Please prepare for daily informal assessments.
III. Review the SAT Vocabulary List 3 terms, definitions, suffixes, and related forms.
IV. Obtain (buy or borrow) a copy of Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury). Read PART 2 of the novel.
V. Read and Annotate "Three and One are One" (Bierce); please identify the assigned prose fiction writing techniques (see TASK on the assignment). Your annotation work MUST be specific and detailed (look at the story closely) to receive full credit. This is a 50 point assignment. DUE 12/5 [A], 12/6 [B]
VI. Prepare for the Ambrose Bierce/American Realism Analysis Seminar. To prepare for the discussion you need to (a) re-read the text, (b) prepare individual notes (based on the analysis questions), and (c) re-examine the text through annotation work. SEMINAR DATE: 12/5 [A], 12/6 [B]
DAILY ASSIGNMENTS
*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.
I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LISTS 1, 2, and 3) You should review the following items:
-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.
In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.
To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.
II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.
III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.
IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)
V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.
