TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS*

I. Organize your notebook. SEE NOTEBOOK STRUCTURE CHART (on blog). AS INDICATED IN CLASS THIS SHOULD BE PRIORITY #1!
 
II. Review the notes taken during the Unit Lesson (Discovering Prose Fiction); review terms, concepts, and other information. Please prepare for daily informal assessments.


III. Review the SAT Vocabulary List 3 terms, definitions, suffixes, and related forms.



IV. Obtain (buy or borrow) a copy of Fahrenheit 451 (Ray Bradbury). Read PART 1 of the novel by 11/21 [A], 11/22 [B]

V. Prepare for the “Young Goodman Brown” (Hawthorne) Literary Analysis Seminar. Review your assigned questions (and all remaining questions) BEFORE the discussion.

VI. Read and annotate "An Occurrence at Owl Creek Bridge" (Bierce).

TASK: While reading the piece please look for and annotate the author’s use of setting, setting imagery, figurative language, irony, characterization, symbolism, metaphor, allusion, foreshadowing, tone, and mood. Also, look for basic elements such as plot, setting, theme, point of view, character, and conflict. Use a dictionary to define unfamiliar words. Also identify examples of syntax (short sentences, polysyndeton, asyndeton, etc.) Highlight (and/or underline) and identify the term, then write the effect, impact, and value of its use.

OBJECTIVE: Students should be able to demonstrate their knowledge of the prose literary elements and their ability to identify those terms used in specific literary passages. Students should also be able to explain the effect, value, and impact of the terms, as well as the overall main idea and purpose of the passage.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LISTS 1, 2, and 3) You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post.

To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards or Extended Definition assignment.

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary terms. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms.

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the rules of grammar. Students will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all rules.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes copies of literary works studied, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to show adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.
