HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (AS OF 8/29 [A], 9/2 [B])

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Organize your notebooks...it has been ONE WEEK since the first day of school. This means you should have had enough time to get things in order....BE PREPARED!!! Use the Notebook Structure Chart.

II. Read and review Course Syllabus and Course Orientation Notes. POP QUIZZES ARE POSSIBLE!!!

Also, you are strenuously urged to learn the information that relates to this course (rules, policies, procedures, standards, etc.)...not knowing it WILL affect you throughout the school year.

III. Register with http://www.turnitin.com/ for all future typed assignments. You will lose 25 points per assignment if the typed work is not submitted.

IV. Bring your TEXTBOOK and WRITING JOURNAL and ALL COURSE MATERIALS to class EVERYDAY!!! Point penalties will be given if textbook, journal and materials are not in class each meeting.

IV. Read 'The Gift of Magi' (page 7 in textbook). This short story should be finished by 9/3 [A], 9/4 [B].

There will be a written assignment assigned on the reading due date. PLEASE MAKE SURE YOU HAVE READ THE STORY BEFORE THAT DATE.

V. NOTE: Becuase of Tropical Storm Fay, you are receiving an extension on this assignment:

VI. Complete the CREATIVE WRITING ASSIGNMENT. Follow the guide sheet to avoid point loss. DUE DATE 9/5 [A], 9/8 [B]

VII. Study the Mini-Lesson: Prose Literature Notes. The quiz on this material is scheduled for 9/3 [A], 9/4 [B]

VIII. Complete the SAT VOCABULARY LIST 1 EXTENDED DEFINITION ASSIGNMENT.

Use the format guide sheet...READ the sheet, follow the rules, avoid point deductions. This is a 40 POINT graded assignment.

IX. Register with ThinkWave (the class grade book program) so you can access your grades. Use the handout that was given to you during class.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LIST 1). You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post. To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards. STANDARD [EV1]

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary elements of prose fiction. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms. STANDARD [ER2]

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the elements of grammar. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of all elements.

IV. Bring materials/supplies to class; this includes textbooks, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
