HOMEWORK ASSIGNMENTS (AS OF 5/8 [A], 5/9 [B])

TONIGHT'S ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: The following assignments should be completed prior to the next class meeting or by the posted due date. Please read all standards and directions when completing.

I. Organize your notebooks...it has been a WHOLE semester since the first day of school. This means you should have had enough time to get things in order....BE PREPARED!!! Use the Notebook Structure Chart.

II. Read and review Romeo and Juliet Act II (Scenes 1-6) (in textbook). BE PREPARED FOR THE IN-CLASS READING/DISCUSSION AND QUIZ.

Also, you are strenuously urged to work on your Study Questions, Chrono Log, and Test Quotes. This should be a nightly homework assignment.

Use the Study Questions Format Guide to avoid point penalties in the areas of style, content, and format.

III. Compose (this means TYPE) the ACT II Personal Response Assignment.

LITERARY WORK FOR ANALYSIS: ROMEO AND JULIET ACT II BY WILLIAM SHAKESPEARE

PREWRITING ASSIGNMENTS: Before you submit this assignment on the assigned due date, you must show evidence that you did the following:

1. FIRST silently read the assignment prompt in FULL.
2. THEN, using your knowledge of the elements/devices of drama and poetry and your ability to respond to literature, re-read Friar Laurence’s lines in Romeo and Juliet ACT II (p. 616, lines 1-30).
3. THEN, organize your commentary (it should have a beginning, middle, and end).
4. FINALLY, prepare to compose your views. To do this you must have a clear understanding of the assignment’s main idea.

MAIN IDEA: In your written personal response you are to clearly discuss the main idea of the assigned work.

ASSIGNMENT: Use your knowledge of the elements/devices of poetry and your ability to respond to literature, and compose (type) a detailed typed response in which you connect the assigned lines to the theme of the dual nature of humans.

Your response must seek to address the following in your response: How do these lines connect to the characters Romeo and Juliet? How do these lines connect to the personal experiences of ordinary humans?*

*NOTE: Use the guide sheet distributed in class. Follow all type specifications and style rules.

IV. Begin reading ACT III (Scene 1).

V. Bring your WRITING JOURNAL to class for the start of the poetry unit. Point penalties will be given if journal is not in class at start of class. DEADLINE IS EVERYDAY!!!

VII. Study and review the DRAMA MINI-LESSON NOTES and handouts. Learn the concepts NOW so YOU are not left behind.

DAILY ASSIGNMENTS

*NOTE: These are assignments that you should be doing whether we have homework or not. There is a level of expectation that requires you as the student to claim some responsibility for your academic career.

I. Study/Review SAT Vocabulary Terms (LISTS 5, 6, and 7). You should review the following items:

-word definitions
-part(s) of speech (nouns, verbs, adjectives, adverbs)
-related forms (family words)
-synonyms and antonyms
-notes on how to distinguish the varied parts of speech.

In addition, students should prepare to work on additional in-class vocabulary assignments by reviewing words nightly. For test/quiz dates see calendar in class or upcoming dates post. To prepare for the in-class study and tests/quizzes, students are encouraged to create 3x5 study cards. STANDARD [EV1]

II. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the literary elements of prose fiction and the rhetorical devices/modes of development. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of ALL terms. They should employ the same study method that is suggested for the SAT terms. STANDARD [ER2]

III. Students should conduct a nightly/daily review of the elements of grammar. Students will be expected to adequate mastery and knowledge of all elements.

IV. Bring Materials/Supplies to class; this includes textbooks, paper, pens, notebooks, writing journals, etc. (NO EXCEPTIONS)

V. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course orientation notes. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course policies and procedures.

VI. You should conduct a nightly/daily review of the course standards. You will be expected to have adequate mastery and knowledge of all course standards.
