WARM-UP ASSIGNMENT
-Task: Using their writing journals and at least three modes of development and rhetorical devices, students should respond to the following prompt: Should The Voting Age Be Lowered? Students must answer the following questions in the content of their response: Does the author make a convincing persuasive argument? What is the author’s tone? Does the author have a valid point? Provide support for your response. Must be at least 150-200 words…a word count is required.
-Materials: Writing journals, pens/pencils, list of rhetorical devices and modes of development.
-Objective: Students should be able to use their knowledge of the modes of development and rhetorical devices in a piece of writing. [STANDARD EW1, 2, 3/ER 2]

-Task: Using their knowledge of rhetorical elements, and the first section of Night by Elie Wiesel, as well as their ability make inferences, students will complete the following quiz. Students must select the best response to each question and place their answer on a provided Scantron. ALL BACKPACKS MUST BE CLOSED AND PLACED UNDER DESK.
-Materials: Scantron, pencil, (and a cleared desk!)
-Objective: Students should be able to demonstrate their knowledge of rhetorical elements, and the first section of Night by Elie Wiesel, as well as their ability make inferences. They should be able to answer at least 13 of the 15 questions correctly. STANDARDS: ER2 and 3
-Time: 15 min. (PLEASE MAKE SURE THAT THERE IS A STRICT ADHERENCE TO THE TIME.)

2. Group Activity-Night (Sections 2&3)
-Task: Using their knowledge of rhetorical elements, their notes, and the book Night students will work for 30 minutes in groups on several study questions. Students must work on the questions silently first, then they are allowed to confer with their other group members to construct a group response.

-Materials: personal copy of NIGHT, annotation guide sheet, pen/pencil, and paper.
-Objective: To develop and/or foster the skills necessary for productive non-fiction literary scholarship. [STANDARD ER2, EW1, 2, 3]
